Cleburne out of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with shin injury

Donegal Racing’s Cleburne, winner of the Grade III Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs, will miss Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with a bucked left shin, trainer Dale Romans said Thursday.

“I guess it came up when he worked the other day and if finally popped out on him the other morning,” Romans said. “It’s just a normal shin, it won’t take long, he’ll get over it. It might be a blessing in the long run, hopefully he’ll be fresh for the spring when we’re aiming at the big races.”

Cleburne is unbeaten in two starts, breaking his maiden by half a length going a mile on the turf at Ellis Park on August 16 before winning the Iroquois by a neck over stablemate Smart Cover at odds of 34-to-1.

The son of Dixie Union was 12-to-1 on the morning line for the Juvenile and was scheduled to break from post No. 7 in the 14-horse field.
