Maker wins training title at Turfway Park

Turfway Park release:

Mike Maker won the training title for the recently completed Turfway Park Holiday Meet to bring his total number of titles to 12 and give him sole possession of second place among trainers in Turfway history.  Maker saddled seven winners from 30 starters for the meet that ran Nov. 29 through Dec. 31.  His title for the 2012 Fall Meet had tied him with D. Wayne Lukas at 11.  Bernard Flint holds the record with 20 titles.

Kellyn Gorder saddled one winner on the Holiday Meet’s last day to boost his total to six winners from 15 starters and take second place alone.  Tim Richardson, Jamie Grubbs, and Jeff Greenhill tied for third with five winners each.

Riding regularly at Turfway for the first time, Norberto Arroyo Jr. marked 28 wins from 109 mounts during the Holiday Meet to run away with his first Turfway riding title.  Albin Jimenez was second with 18 wins from 96 mounts. Rodney Prescott was third with 17 wins from 124 mounts.

Milestone victories highlighted the efforts of Arroyo and Prescott during the 22-day meet.  Arroyo hit his 1,000th career win on Dec. 8 and Prescott counted his 3,000th career win on Dec. 27.  Jimenez’s performance was notable for his $22.50 average win payoff, second-highest among the meet’s top 10 jockeys.

Doug Coyle and S and L Stables Inc. tied for leading owner honors with four wins each, Coyle from 14 starters and S and L Stables from eight starters.  Six owners tied for third with three winners each: Burton Sipp, Sherri Greenhill, Kevin Hulse of TK Stables, James Wright, William Stiritz and the Win-Ben Farm of Mel Winegarden.

The Holiday Meet ends with New Year’s Eve each year but live racing segues without interruption into the Winter/Spring Meet, which opens annually on Jan. 1 and this year ends on March 30.

The annual highlight of the winter meet, the Grade III $500,000 Spiral Stakes, is set for March 23.  The Spiral Stakes is the seventh of eight races that comprise the first leg of the Kentucky Derby Championship Series, part of the new points system that determines the Derby field.

During January, Turfway offers live racing every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

In February, live racing will be presented on the first two Fridays and Saturdays: the 1st, 2nd, 8th, and 9th.  Feb. 15, 16, 22, and 23 remain as optional days.
